Each year, hundreds of young adults in the greater Dallas/Ft. Worth area are aged out of the Scottish Rite for Children (SRC) hospital system while still in need of orthopedic care. In many cases, these individuals have coverage gaps, are underinsured or have no insurance coverage at all. They are often left with needs not met by government assistance or insurance once they turn 18 years of age.

The Carrell Clinic Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that was created in 2017 to provide such assistance to musculoskeletal patients. North Central Surgical Center Hospital, in partnership with United Surgical Partners International (USPI) and other providers, works with the Carrell Clinic Foundation to provide surgical care, free of charge, to qualifying individuals over 18 years of age.

Gennie Mansi, age 23, was entering her final semester at Baylor University, finishing up degrees in statistics and computer science when she fell and injured her leg. With a torn ACL, strained hamstring and multiple microfractures in her leg, doctors told her she would need surgery.

At the time of her injury, recent changes to her family’s financial situation left Gennie with limited resources. In addition to balancing her schoolwork as an honors student, Gennie spent multiple weeks trying to find the surgical care she needed.

“Even when I did find a surgery option with financial aid available, I didn’t have a car to easily travel back and forth for appointments,” stated Gennie. “Then when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and my surgery was postponed indefinitely, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do.”

That’s when Gennie reached out to the Carrell Clinic Foundation, North Central Surgical Center Hospital and Dr. Daniel Cooper to help Gennie get the surgery she needed – and, at no cost to her.

“Not only was my entire surgery paid for, but all of the care providers at North Central Surgical Center Hospital went above and beyond during every step of my surgery and recovery process,” said Gennie. “With my financial situation, I was worried about having to compromise the quality of care I received which is why I was so grateful to be in the hands of Dr. Cooper and his team.”

“It seems like such a simple thing to get surgery for an injured leg, but my situation left me with many challenges that kept me from living my life comfortably,” added Gennie. “Being able to walk up the steps to my apartment is something I’ll never take for granted. Since my leg surgery, I’ve been able to get back to focusing on my education, my new role as a research assistant and ultimately my future career in science and technology. I could not have done that without the help of the Carrell Clinic Foundation and North Central Surgical Center Hospital.”
