The Hospitals of Providence Performs El Paso’s First Pulmonary Valve Replacement Using Alterra System

THOP Alterra for Pulm Valve

The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus has achieved another significant milestone in advancing cardiac care. Surgeons recently successfully performed El Paso’s first pulmonary valve replacement using the Alterra Adaptive Prestent System, paired with a transcatheter pulmonary valve. The procedure represents another advancement in minimally invasive structural heart care now available to patients in the community.

The Alterra system is designed to create a stable platform within the right ventricular outflow tract, allowing a transcatheter pulmonary valve to be securely positioned in patients who may not be suitable for a valve alone. By using a catheter-based approach, the procedure can reduce the need for open-chest surgery and support a faster recovery for eligible patients.

“This procedure represents an important step forward in the cardiac care we can provide to patients with complex pulmonary valve disease,” said Dr. Chalam Mulukutla, Interventional Cardiologist who performed the first successful procedure. “Many patients are not candidates for open-heart surgery or may not be physically able to travel out of town for care – so being able to provide this option right here in the El Paso community is significant for our patients.”

The cardiovascular epicenter for The Hospitals of Providence, the Sierra Campus continues to expand heart care services for the El Paso region, offering the latest in advanced heart care procedures and pulmonary valve replacements. The Sierra Campus offers a comprehensive cardiovascular care program – from diagnosis to rehabilitation, including a cardiac nurse navigator who guides patients throughout their journey, coordinating their healthcare needs and answering questions along the way.

“Offering advanced, minimally invasive cardiac procedures like this one demonstrates our commitment to continually expand the level of cardiac care available to patients in our region,” said David Byrd, Chief Executive Office for The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus. “For over 50 years, we have been serving families of our region by providing the care they need, close to home.”
