DMC Hutzel Women’s Hospital Opens Upgraded Postpartum Rooms, OB Triage Rooms

The Detroit Medical Center recently cut the ribbon on a $4.87 million renovation of the DMC Hutzel Women’s Hospital’s Mother/Baby unit, designed based on insightful input from moms who use it. The beautiful, renovated spaces include 21 new postpartum rooms for advanced, high-level care for moms and babies; a new eight-room Obstetrics Triage Unit; and a new Mother/Baby reception area.
“We have refreshed our Mother/Baby environment but, more importantly, we listened to moms in our community and are delivering on their recommendations,” DMC CEO Brittany Lavis said. “Moms deserve convenient, exceptional care close to home, with a warm and comfortable space to welcome their new baby.”
With soothing lighting, courtyard views, custom cabinetry, mini-fridges, soft neutrals and wood tones of natural décor, the newly renovated rooms for babies and mothers who just gave birth at DMC Hutzel Women’s Hospital resemble a high-end hotel.
The project at DMC Hutzel Women’s Hospital is part of a multi-year renovation plan across the Detroit Medical Center’s Mother/Baby units at Hutzel, DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital on Detroit’s northwest side and DMC Huron Valley Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township, serving northern Oakland County.
“Each project is one more example of Detroit Medical Center’s dedication to our communities’ mothers and babies,” said Lavis. “Along with uplifting the experience, we are reducing complications and improving outcomes, grateful to be a part of these moms’ and babies’ lives.”
As Michigan’s first and only hospital for women, built in 1868, DMC Hutzel Women’s Hospital has been a referral center for physicians throughout Michigan for their high-risk patients. The Joint Commission, in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, designated DMC Hutzel Women’s Hospital as a Level IV maternal care-verified facility, the highest level awarded by the Commission for care of birthing mothers.
Hutzel’s Maternal Levels of Care (MLC) Verification is one of only a handful of Level IV verifications in the state of Michigan. Detroit Medical Center’s DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township and DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit received Level II MLC verifications from The Joint Commission, the United States’ oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare. The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 22,000 healthcare organizations and programs across the nation.
