Northeast Baptist Hospital Pulmonologists Performing Aliya PEF Ablation Procedure to Remove Tumors

In San Antonio, Texas, pulmonologists at Northeast Baptist Hospital are now performing the Aliya PEF (Pulsed Electric Field) ablation procedure to remove tumors from patients’ lungs using high-voltage, brief electrical pulses to treat targeted cancer cells.
These pulses interfere with the cells' normal processes, causing them to break down and die. Because the pulses are electrical and do not use heat, the technology helps protect important proteins in cells and the tissues around them. The Aliya PEF can be performed at the same time as diagnostic biopsies.
Researchers are also studying whether the treatment may help signal the body's immune system’s natural defenses to recognize and help the body clear away damaged cells.
The Aliya PEF is a new technology at Northeast Baptist Hospital and North Central Baptist Hospital, which are part of the Baptist Health System.
