Palmetto General Hospital will open a Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) on October 20, 2017. The CDU is an observation area that provides ongoing patient care, short-term treatment, diagnostic testing and assessment. Observation services are commonly ordered for patients who enter the Emergency Department and who require more time for the physician to determine if they need additional inpatient treatment or may be safely discharged. This new unit will help support the hospital's emergency services and the efficient care transition of patients as they are assessed and potentially admitted.
“The new Clinical Decision Unit, adjacent to the Emergency Department, will provide our community with an alternative to being discharged home or being admitted to the hospital. This unit will allow Palmetto General Hospital the ability to manage ER patients more efficiently and effectively reducing wait time to be seen in the ER and decreasing cost of hospital care,” said Palmetto CEO Ana Mederos.
The hospital will host a free community grand opening event to celebrate the new unit October 21.
