Detroit Medical Center First to Use New Stent for Blocked Blood Vessels

As the most common type of heart disease, coronary heart disease (CHD) kills more than 370,000 people annually. Detroit Medical Center (DMC) is the first Tenet hospital and the first in Michigan to offer patients with CHD a new treatment option for vessels that are difficult to open.

In 1952, Dr. Forest Dodrill, a physician at Detroit Medical Center’s (DMC) Harper University Hospital in Michigan, was faced with the daunting task of performing open-heart surgery on a patient with a failing mitral valve. This surgery was not feasible at the time because a device that could continue pumping blood during the operation did not yet exist.
