Bride and Groom Say Their Vows in the Tenet Hospital That Saved Groom’s Life

Thirty-seven-year-old special education teacher Robert Valdez was taken to The Hospitals of Providence (THOP) East Campus in El Paso, Texas, after suffering a massive stoke. Once stabilized, he was transferred to THOP Sierra Campus for care, which is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission.

In 1952, Dr. Forest Dodrill, a physician at Detroit Medical Center’s (DMC) Harper University Hospital in Michigan, was faced with the daunting task of performing open-heart surgery on a patient with a failing mitral valve. This surgery was not feasible at the time because a device that could continue pumping blood during the operation did not yet exist.

Like many kids her age, Claire, a vivacious 13 year old from St. Clair Shores, Michigan, loved to be active. However, she was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the cervical spine at Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Children’s Hospital of Michigan, which is a rare, abnormal tangle of blood vessels in or near the spinal cord. The condition can lead to numerous conditions, including hemorrhaging, weakness, problems with balance and coordination.
