St. Mary’s Ambulatory Surgery Center (SMASC) is offering an innovative new solution for knee replacement to patients in Virginia. The facility recently became the first ambulatory surgery center in the state to use a smart knee implant for total knee replacement surgery.

The smart knee implant offers implantable sensor technology that measures range of motion, step count, walking speed and other gait metrics. This technology is meant to facilitate an advancement in the patient’s postoperative recovery period, particularly regarding physical therapy and mobility.

“Together with our physicians, we are constantly striving to offer more cutting-edge solutions for our patients,” said Shane Stanford, RN, BSN, MBA, MSN, Administrator at St. Mary’s Ambulatory Surgery Center. “This is an important new advancement that we believe will enhance post-surgical care for our patients following total knee arthroplasty procedures. I would like to extend appreciation to our staff and physicians for their support in offering this important solution to our community.”
