Eating Right to Protect the Heart

Eating healthy can be difficult for many people – especially when others around them are not doing so.  Karen Stewart, a nutritionist with the American Heart Association’s “Search Your Heart” Program in Los Angeles, teaches low-income children, adults and seniors how to reduce their intake of saturated fat and sodium and lower their risk of heart disease and stroke.  “We show people that healthy food can be both affordable and easy to prepare,” said Stewart.

The Foundation gave the AHA a $50,000 grant this year to continue the church-based program in primarily African-American and Latino communities served by several Tenet hospitals in Southern California.  “Without the Foundation’s help, we simply could not have reached all of these needy people,” said Valerie Loduem, director of African-American Programs and Operation Stroke for the AHA.
