Creating a Living Legacy

For Sam Harris, making an annual donation to Heifer Project International means more than just giving money each year to a worthy cause.  It’s also about creating a unique living legacy to his mother.

Lois Harris volunteered with HPI, a Little Rock, Ark.-based group that sends animals, primarily cows and chickens, along with training in their care, to hungry families around the world to help them become self-reliant.  Every Christmas, she would give her seven children the gift of one heifer for a needy family.  When she died three years ago, her children donated seven heifers – one for each of them – in her name.

Sam Harris, manager, reimbursement, at Tenet’s Los Angeles office, continues the tradition by making a contribution to HPI each year on her birthday.  The donation buys one heifer and the Foundation’s Matching Gift pays for a second one.  “I know my mother would be very proud of this tribute,” he said.  “I deeply appreciate everything the Foundation does to support the programs that are most dear to my heart.”
