Gary Ruff, general counsel and senior vice president of Tenet Healthcare Corporation, is responsible for leading all aspects of Tenet’s legal activities at the corporate, regional and hospital levels. Ruff serves on the company’s executive management team and reports directly to Trevor Fetter, Tenet’s president and chief executive officer.

Prior to his appointment as general counsel in 2008, Ruff served as vice president and assistant general counsel from 2003 to 2008, directing and coordinating Tenet’s hospital operations and legal staff. His responsibilities included ensuring compliance with industry statutes and regulations and overseeing physician financial arrangements.

He joined Tenet in 1992 as associate counsel of the company’s former Gulf States region, which included 12 hospitals. In 2001, Ruff received Tenet’s Teamwork Award for outstanding customer service. Before joining Tenet, Ruff was a tax manager for Deloitte & Touche LLP where he specialized in corporate reorganizations and individual tax planning. 

Ruff received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Gonzaga University, his master’s degree in management from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, his master’s of law degree in taxation from Georgetown University and his juris doctorate from Pepperdine University.

Ruff is a member of the California and Texas Bar Associations as well as a member of the American Health Lawyers Association.
